Impressions of Ram's Salute

In most of issues of our newsletters we discuss the details of many of the techniques that we use in the Danse de Rue system. This month I want to take the opportunity to talk about how we can learn by using the sets we are taught - in this case Ram's Salute.

The most important thing to keep in mind is the use of a technique such as this is for the expressed purpose of going home safely at the end of the day. So, the practice of the first parry chasse with a step helps one to build a reaction to a punch coming in and getting off the line and out of the way (the number one skill to for survival). I find that practicing this part with a training partner can help build timing and a good feeling of what I like to call the range of safety.

Next the hit to the back of the opponents neck is of course a brutal strike but at another level can give you a great feeling of your range and angle to your opponent's centerline - it puts you in control. Again we have an opportunity to train a reaction. This time a counterattack that is immediate as soon as you are safely off the attacker's angle of attack.

We conclude the technique with the coup de tete and then a coude. This is a part of the great flavor of Danse de Rue Savate. You have an opportunity to close the gap on your opponent and deliver rapid destructive blows all at the same time.

All and all Ram's Salute is one of my favorite training sets because it trains reaction, angles (defensive and offensive), timing, different ranges, and closing the gap on the attacker. I like to train this with a training partner that is willing to experiment with me playing with different angles of attack, speeds, levels and ranges.

Have a great 2008!!!!!!!!!!!!
