(Chicago, IL) Initiateur Patrick `Jilguero' Gavin presented a clinic during the International Combatives Self Defense Association gathering here on May 24th. A presentation of basic self defence utilising the cane was taught to an assemblage of seventeen students with backgrounds in kali, karate, jiu-jitsu, and other martial arts. Foundational principles and movements of sport canne de combat and the art of canne d'arme were demonstrated and applied for the students.

After a degree of trial and error, certain practitioners of the stick arts seemed to catch on and discover new and useful techniques. According to Gavin: “The hardest thing for short stick practitioners to account for in their movements was the length of the cane and the heft and weight of a real cane as opposed to a light rattan training implement. The cane affords you a greater measure of attacking range in a fight, so you do not have to constantly look to close in nose to nose with the opponent. Further, you must account for the fact that you cannot `twirl' a cane as you would a short, light, rattan stick. The man who taught me canne de combat has Popeye forearms and is strong enough to do this - but even he does not use his weapon this way.”

Several students were impressed with the integration of footwork with striking in cane fencing movements. “You have to move and strike - as you would walk and chew gum at the same time. In Danse de Rue Savate we are taught that if you stay there waiting to be hit, your opponent will gladly oblige you for your carelessness,” explains Gavin.

The International Combatives Self Defense Association is a group of instructors and practitioners of combative and self defense martial arts based out of Chicago, Illinois.
